Pocket Tools

Along side my full everyday carry setup are two tools that live in my front pocket:

  1. The Knipex Cobra Pliers 87 01 125
  2. The Topeaks ratchet with two 3 1/2″ DeWalt bits.

This small but functional kit allows me to use the pliers and the screwdriver at the same time. This is a huge advantage over a multitool which usually has the screwdriver physically integrated into the body of the pliers only allowing the use of either tool at one time.

The Knipex Cobra Pliers 87 01 125 have been a staple in the everyday carry community for some time now. Admired for the quality engineering and compact size of the tool, it has found its way into many EDC posts and forum pages.

The Topeak Ratchet was originally part of a set meant for bicycle maintenance. The shorter bits it came with worked well enough but I found more use in pairing the ratchet with two 3 1/2 inch DeWalt bits a No. 2 Philips and a No. 8 Slotted bit(flat head). The ratchet style driver proves more useful to me than a regular style driver when getting into tight spots to loosen screws.

Both tools are housed in individual handmade leather slips made by yours truly. Made from Herman Oak 6-7oz Veg Tan leather. These slips keep the tools from falling over sideways when riding in the bottom of my pocket and keeps the ratchet together with the bits when pulling them out of the pocket.

With that being said, I believe having separate dedicated pocket tools becomes more useful in the long run versus having a bulky multitool with implements that you do not need throughout your day to day routine.
