EDC Pocket Utility Knife: GILTEK RUK P

Something that I have been carrying daily now for the last 4 months is the GILTEK RUK P. A one hand operational, small pocket utility knife made in the USA all for only $10.

GILTEK is an American company based out of Colorado. They make the RUKs from multiple material including FRN, titanium, brass and aluminum. They also have a few more products such as a wallet and machined beads.

Price: $10

Weight: 2 oz

Dimensions: 3″ × 1.25″ × .2″(inches)

Handle Material: Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon

Origin: Made in USA

Now there are a few reason to carry a utility knife with you, such as:

  1. Having a secondary/beater knife that you are not afraid to break the tip on
  2. If you do break the tip or it dulls you can easily swap the blade for a sharp one
  3. Usually small and lightweight
  4. People friendly

I started carrying the GILTEK RUK for cutting open containers that I didn’t want to use my main EDC knife for. Things like cutting into the foil at the top of chemical/oil bottles and opening and breaking down boxes. And after using this little knife for a while I started grabbing it more and more over my dedicated knife.

The way I carry the RUK is I just slip it into my pocket next to my wallet. I keep it inside a handmade leather sheath made from veg tan leather. I have also added a small lanyard to help with gripping the knife when in use.

Using some paracord to add a lanyard gave me more length to the handle for increased comfort during longer cutting sessions.

I believe the inclusion of a beater knife into your EDC can be a very valuable asset, even more so when the blade can be replaced so easily. This knife is great for quick cuts and opening boxes/containers without having to worry about dulling the blade or damaging the blade. It is cheap, lightweight and made in the USA.

Bonus Thought: With the ability to exchange the utility blade this also becomes perfect knife for carrying through TSA. You have the ability to drop the blade before going into the airport and then you can easily pick up another pack of blade from your location.
